The Power of Mindfulness Through Movement

How mindfulness practices can foster resilience, wellbeing, and a sense of community.

Finding Calm in Chaos

I have been practicing tai chi and other mindfulness-based physical activities for decades. I used to struggle with significant social anxiety and stage fright. I remember trying hard to mask the anxiety I was experiencing when I had to make presentations or even in meetings during which I had to speak in front of people. I immigrated to the United States in my 20s to pursue a graduate degree in social work. English is my second language, and I grew up in Korea until I moved to the United States. Having English as a second language working in an American environment likely compounded my anxiety issues, though I recall myself being an anxious child growing up in Korea.

A decade later, my anxiety worsened when I moved back to Korea, my native country, with my American husband, who was a government employee. Shortly after returning to my native country, I joined the U.S. Army’s Adolescent Support and Counseling Service (ASACS) program (the same one I am still with today) to work with military youth on a U.S. Army base in Seoul, Korea. I enjoyed working with adolescents but found some aspects of the job quite stressful, such as running groups and making presentations. There were times I just wished to disappear because I was dreading the upcoming events and felt nauseous with anxiety.

I may be an anxious creature, but I am also a strong-willed one with grit. Since practicing tai chi, I have been involved in some mindfulness-based physical activities wherever I live worldwide. I was introduced to Taekwondo for the first time in Germany when I transferred to Germany with the same program, ASACS. The Germans thought I would be a Taekwondo genius coming from the country of Taekwondo. Sadly, to their surprise, earning a yellow belt took me a year! I also got to practice Chinese tai chi at a German Taekwondo, which helped me transition to living in Germany.

Discovering Mindfulness Through Movement

Tai chi is meditation in action. It involves mindfulness practice. Mindfulness practice is so widely accepted and practiced these days. It’s a very familiar concept, yet it’s not easy to consistently put it into practice for results. Mindfulness practice involves paying attention to what we experience in the moment without judgment, instead with openness and acceptance of the feelings, thoughts, and physical sensations that visit us. So, commitment and discipline are required to see it work. The practice of mindfulness helps us become more aware of ourselves, others, and what’s happening around us, which usually leads to better decision-making and an increased sense of wellbeing and peace of mind.

When I practice tai chi, I try to keep my attention on the movements and breathing I am engaged in—however, my mind chatters about all sorts of things, disregarding my good intentions. I continue with the movements while simply noticing the mind’s chatters without judgments, keeping my attention on breathing as if they are the most precious thing. And they are, indeed! As I continued with the practice by noticing and accepting my mind’s chatters, they started quieting down. Sometimes, I even notice chatters turning kinder and gentler with occasional thoughts of gratitude.

Integrating Mindfulness into Everyday Activities

Not everyone will get excited about taking up tai chi or other physical activities. However, if you already have physical activities that you regularly practice, I encourage you to try adding a mindfulness practice to your activities. It might help enhance your exercises with better outcomes and more enjoyment, eventually leading to greater peace and balance. Having regular tai chi practice, especially with others who share the same interest in tai chi, makes a difference in how I go about my day every day. Tai chi offers a community where I connect with myself and others by practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness research suggests that developing this capacity to observe ourselves and our surroundings with kindness has deep and nourishing effects on our wellbeing that ripple into our daily lives and communities.

Why Mindfulness Matters

Even if you don’t regularly participate in physical activities, you can still introduce a mindfulness practice into your daily life through daily routine. Every day, we shower, brush our hair, eat, walk, clean, etc. Anything we do, we can do mindfully. On days you feel cluttered in your head, it’s nice to try eating very slowly and savor every bite of your food. Start by simply shifting your breathing to quiet, deep breaths. You may find this helps quell anxiety and feel better grounded. It doesn’t matter what we do to come to the present moment, but to just enjoy being there in totality. Breathe, smell, hear, see, taste, and sense kindly. Namaste.




Focus on joy for happier holidays

The holiday season is a time for celebration, but it can also cause feelings of stress, grief, anxiety and sadness. Whether it’s feeling pressured to create the perfect holiday, navigating family dynamics or dealing with loneliness and/or social anxiety, this time of year can be challenging.

Tips for experiencing happier holidays:

  1. Check in with yourself: Acknowledging and validating your feelings can help you address negative emotions and make space for positive ones. Taking a step back ensures you don’t become overwhelmed.
  2. Engage in self-care activities: Prioritizing activities that enhance your wellbeing, such as exercise, adequate sleep, nutritious food, reading or a relaxing bath, can help you find moments of joy during the holiday busyness.
  3. Volunteer and connect: Helping others can be a powerful way to lift your spirits. Volunteering at events like food, toy and winter clothing drives can help you meet new people, overcome feelings of loneliness and increase your overall positivity and health.
  4. Create meaningful traditions: Establishing new ways to celebrate can bring comfort and joy. Whether it’s celebrating at a different location, preparing a special dish or honoring the memory of a loved one, creating unique memories can foster a positive outlook.
  5. Seek professional support: If you find yourself struggling, therapists and counselors can provide valuable tools to help you manage emotions, family trauma or stress and cope with grief.

It’s normal to experience a range of emotions during the holidays. By prioritizing your mental health, embracing new traditions and taking care of yourself, you can focus on moments of joy.

Cultivating culture, community and connection to support BIPOC

Creating inclusive communities where Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) feel a sense of belonging and support is important to their wellbeing. Research shows individuals with strong social connections are 50% more likely to live longer and have a better chance of preventing serious illnesses like heart disease, stroke, dementia, anxiety and depression.

Here are five ways you can connect with BIPOC to cultivate culture, community and connection.           

  1. Explore the values, beliefs and traditions of diverse cultures: Exploring BIPOC articles, books, documentaries, cultural museums, languages or cuisines can cultivate respect, empathy and inclusivity.
  2. Seek authentic connections: Build meaningful BIPOC relationships by finding common ground, personally and professionally. Genuine cultural connections can emerge from supportive neighboring, discussing shared interests or embracing diverse perspectives to achieve common goals.
  3. Engage in community activities: Volunteer to support the BIPOC community by assisting at events or with organizations serving BIPOC populations.
  4. Promote services and resources that help BIPOC communities: Sharing information about services, resources and job opportunities online or through personal networks can aid BIPOC communities significantly.
  5. Support BIPOC organizations: Strengthen community ties and show commitment to BIPOC concerns by supporting BIPOC organizations. This can include buying from local BIPOC businesses, amplifying their voices on social media and advocating for BIPOC needs in civic forums.

Together, we can build a more inclusive and supportive community for all. Every action counts in fostering culture, community, connection and BIPOC wellbeing.

Spotlight Magellan Health: National Volunteer Month

Throughout the month of April, we are celebrating National Volunteer Month. We’re expressing our gratitude to all individuals who donate their time and resources to local or national efforts. In this spotlight are three Magellan Health employees who explain why they volunteer and what organizations are most important to them:

What volunteer work do you participate in and for what organizations?

Stephen: In 2016, I launched a church campaign to help remove the stigma of mental illness among Black Americans. I began lecturing and teaching classes throughout the faith-based community to eradicate the demonization of those with a mental illness, inform our community on suicide prevention, and offer alternative solutions for substance abuse.

Shortly after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a government-sponsored food program approached me, seeking a partnership with our ministry to distribute food to our community. In August 2020, we began distributing over 36,000 pounds of food to our community every Saturday morning. At our peak, we had several Saturdays where we gave away over 72,000 pounds of food in less than three hours! The community embraced our ministry, and in March of 2021, we secured the building where we currently reside. Last month, we graciously accepted an award for a grant to sponsor a program I created, “Eat Well – Be Well,” which allows us to distribute $400 of fresh fruits and vegetables bi-weekly to a senior community we adopted. Helping to overcome the health disparities of aged people of color has been a tremendously joyful experience. We hope that if even in a small way, we can positively move the bar for the health of this community.

Matthew: I volunteer at Canterbury Enterprises, an organization that provides meaningful and nurturing onsite employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Our entire focus is on creating a supportive, engaging, and respectful workplace for folks whose abilities may not align with traditional workplaces. At Canterbury, our associates are part of a team, they are proud of the work they do, and everyone is dedicated to making it the best experience for each of our associates, as well as for their families. It has been fascinating learning the intricacies of running a sheltered workshop and navigating the legislative, accreditation, and business development opportunities involved, while never losing focus on those we serve – the employees who work at Canterbury.

I am also on the board for Clare’s House. Similarly, when my friend Terry Economos told me her vision for helping seniors and people who are challenged to keep their beloved family dog at home, I knew I wanted to dive in. Clare’s House walks dogs for people who cannot; we take beloved family dogs to visit their owners in assisted living and in rehab facilities. We offer fostering for those temporary periods where the owner is not able to care for their dog. We take dogs to groomers and help pay for medications and surgeries for folks who would otherwise consider relinquishing their beloved furry friend to a shelter. Clare’s House partners with VA centers and other facilities to support their residents to house their family pets if they cannot.

I also have the pleasure of providing leadership and support for the passionate group of Magellan employees who affiliate with the Maryland Heights (St. Louis), MO office, and volunteer to lead awareness and fundraising efforts for our highlighted local charities. Each year, these employees to select the charities to be highlighted for the year. The planning team initiates communication campaigns, onsite volunteering activities, and general awareness. In 2022, our employees touched the lives of many people in our communities, raising over $28,000 in donations.

Barb: Although I continue to actively support NAMI Maryland and the Maryland Food Bank locally, I’m currently focusing my efforts on donating to organizations, rather than in-person volunteering.

How did you get involved with this organization and volunteering in general? How long have you been volunteering?

Stephen: In 2016, I accepted the invitation to lead the Glen Allen VA chapter of Magellan Cares where I created the first onsite volunteer fair. Our Magellan Cares team engaged our coworkers to attend and commit to volunteering. The fair resulted in over a hundred employees signing up to volunteer at participating organizations.

Matthew: I started at Canterbury in 2015 where my friend served as the executive director. I shared with my friend that I was interested in volunteering and knowing I work in Human Resources, he recommended I join the board of Canterbury. I started volunteering at Clare’s House in 2020, the Women’s Safe House in 2002, and Room at the Inn in 2014.

Barb: I joined the company in 1992 and was quickly asked to join the newly forming Community Affairs Committee. Our focus was supporting NAMI Maryland and United Way of Central Maryland. Once our Columbia presence grew, we added support to American Red Cross with monetary donations and blood drives held at the office, Toys for Tots during the Holidays, Grass Roots (a Howard County organization dedicated to assisting victims of domestic violence), and the Maryland Food Bank. Recently we participated in and obtained a corporate sponsorship for the 2022 Walk to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Additionally, we are currently gearing up for the upcoming 2023 NAMI Walks event.

Why is it important for others to volunteer in their communities?

Stephen: When we can find commonality with others, despite our racial, political, ideological, cultural, or socioeconomic differences, that commonality can overshadow any differences and fulfill our human need for community. When that human need is fulfilled, it motivates us to want to do our part, not just for ourselves, but for others. And, particularly for those who are unable to do for themselves.

Matthew: I hope Volunteer Month serves as the bright light that gets you thinking about how you can help, and whose lives you can touch, at any time of the year.  There are so many people and families in our local communities who struggle in one way or another.

Barb: As Magellan employees, we are fortunate to be able to help and most have a cause dear to their hearts. All small donations add up, and participation in a local event that raises awareness and visibility to an organization that is personally important can be life altering to someone in need.

Is there anything else about what National Volunteer Month you’d like to highlight?

Stephen: Magellan employees are fortunate to work for a company that encourages everyone to volunteer. Many non-profit organizations are dependent on people like us who are willing to volunteer and help others in need.

Matthew: Thank you to those people who had a vision to create a service or pull a group of like-minded people together to help meet those needs. Vision is not enough – to make a vision a reality, organizations depend on people who have similar passions and a desire to make the world a better place for others.

Barb: I, personally, am a huge supporter of the American Red Cross. In most cases, they are first on the scene of natural disasters, man-made disasters, personal disasters, or wherever assistance is most needed. Then there are the blood donation management efforts. It just seems like, whatever is needed, the Red Cross is always there; and I try to be there for them!

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and the Importance of Self-Direction

Thirty years ago, President Ronald Reagan deemed March to be Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Awareness months are an important advocacy tool, as they provide opportunities to reflect on progress and continue meaningful conversations about the future. For many people with developmental disabilities, ensuring these discussions take place can be the difference between being invisible and living as full citizens in their communities.

Developmental disabilities awareness is something near and dear to me, not only as the president of TMG by Magellan Health—supporting the largest self-directed long-term services and supports program of its kind in the country—but also because of my graduate work. During my practicum, I worked on the South side of Chicago, assisting low-income families who had children with developmental disabilities. Too often, these families, many of them single mothers, struggled to find the necessary services to help their children live as independently and inclusively as possible. The isolation the children experienced was heartbreaking.

Fortunately, in the 20 years since then, I’ve seen wonderful strides in the resources available for people with developmental disabilities, as well as greater expectations for community inclusion. Self-direction has played a crucial role in this progress. With self-direction, individuals choose not only the services they receive and who provides them, but also how they live their lives. This means people have control over things many of us take for granted: living where and with whom we want; making our own schedule; having meaningful, lasting relationships; pursuing our hobbies and passions; and finding meaningful work or volunteer opportunities. There’s been an amazing nationwide movement towards self-direction, which is not only a best practice, but also the cornerstone of TMG’s work in Wisconsin’s innovative IRIS (Include, Respect, I Self-Direct) program.

While there’s been great progress in raising expectations and increasing opportunities and resources for individuals with developmental disabilities, there’s still much to overcome on the path towards greater acceptance and inclusion. Thankfully, as community inclusion and self-direction are becoming more commonplace, society increasingly recognizes the contributions that people with developmental disabilities can make. As a leader in helping individuals create healthy, vibrant lives, Magellan Health is at the forefront of self-direction with its Wisconsin program, and is building a strong self-direction component in its new managed long-term services and supports (MLTSS) program, Magellan Complete Care of Virginia.

So as you make your way through March, take time to think about the people in your life and in your community and how we can all support one another. Learn how to be a better advocate for individuals with disabilities at sites such as ACL.gov and NACDD.org, and read stories of self-direction in TMG’s The Path Ahead. Encourage and support inclusion and independence whenever you can. But mostly, take the time to get to know people for who they are and appreciate their individual gifts and talents.
