Children’s Services

With more than 20 years of expertise managing behavioral health and children’s system-of-care models, we understand that every situation is unique. Our approach to serving children and youth addresses each individual’s needs, helping them to live at home successfully, achieve in school, participate in their communities, and enter adulthood.
Young people and their families are central to decision-making. That’s why our screening, planning and treatment programs are youth-guided and family-driven.

Magellan’s system-of-care approach includes:

  • Evidence-based best practices that are developmentally appropriate and trauma-informed.
  • Special focus on children younger than five and youth transitioning to adulthood.
  • Plan and provider programming that ensures choice and participation for youth and family.
  • Cross-system collaboration between child welfare, juvenile justice and education.
  • Additional support and coordination for youth involved with multiple systems.

Our research-based children’s model

Read about our model for serving children and youth in this brief summary document, or read our full clinical monograph, Understanding and Meeting the Needs of Children and Adolescents at High Risk: Foundations of a Model.

Our successes include:

  • Arizona – 50% decrease in children under 4 years old using 3+ psychotropic medications in one year
  • Nebraska – 48% reduced residential care census in two years
  • Pennsylvania – 100% increase in number of providers using metabolic screenings in one year
  • Arizona – 300+ children transitioned from out-of-home placement in one year

Thought leadership

Magellan sets the benchmark for new advancements in behavioral health and child care models.
Some of our groundbreaking programs include:

The industry-leading “Children’s Champion” initiative, which yielded a clinical monograph on the appropriate use of psychotropic medication, monitoring and education – as well as an update in 2017. Visit our monograph page for the full document, an infographic and other resources.

MY LIFE (Magellan Youth Leaders Inspiring Future Empowerment), which provides peer-level support to youth ages 13 to 23 who have experience with mental health, substance abuse, juvenile justice and foster-care issues.

Transition to Independence Process (TIP), which uses evidence-supported practices to help youth and young adults with emotional and/or behavioral difficulties better transition into adulthood
